A rose by any other name smells just as sweet, and for the 600 students at Lois Lenski Elementary in Centennial, it’s pretty sweet, too.
Opened for business in 1978, with a staff of 80, Lois Lenski Elementary is a 50 percent choice school. That means “if (parents) are interested in (bring their kids here), then there is a process by which they can complete an application to come here,” say principal Barbara Despain.
But be advised, Despain said, “there’s a wait.”
Lois Elementary won the Blue Ribbon for exemplary achievement.
“Our Blue Ribbon Award is based on the exemplary achievement and growth of all of our students.” said Despain.
Sue Holt has been teaching here for 12 years now and says the secret to the school’s success is no secret at all.
“We have great leadership in our school,” Holt said. “Dr. Despain is a wonderful principal. She allows the teachers a lot of freedom in choices for what’s best for their students.”
To win one Blue Ribbon is quite an achievement, but Lois Lenski has won two. That’s a pretty big deal,
“Yes it is,” Despain said.”And we’re very proud of it.”
